Typical Day

During a typical day, anglers will likely fish several locations to fill their limits of chinook and coho salmon, halibut and rockfish. Catch and release is also encouraged, which enables anglers to enjoy a full day of fishing instead of quickly limiting and returning to the dock.

Why is fishing Queen Charlottes so good?

The island sits at the crossroads of southbound migrating salmon. The west side of the island can easily be described as a “salmon super highway” with hundreds of runs of salmon converging in one area. Some of these fish are heading to southeast Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Idaho, but they all swim past this remote wilderness area en route. We will drive you 15 minutes to the Sandspit marina where our captain will meet you. The coffee will be hot and the boat will be clean and ready to fish. You can purchase your BC fishing licence and salmon stamp at the lodge.

It is about a 45-minute trip to the fishing grounds, and we have to consider the tide each way to get past some shallow sections. The west coast is a magical and very remote place, teeming with fish.

All fishing gear, bait, and tackle are supplied. We use the very best equipment which includes Shimano, Lamiglass and G. Loomis rods with Shimano and Penn reels. For halibut fishing we use Newell Graphite reels, which are very lightweight and powerful.

You should wear warm clothes in layers  -- but we do get nice days from time to time! For the most part the weather is in the 50’s and it rains a lot. You can bring your own rain gear, but it is provided aboard the boat as well.

On board you will be offered snacks, cookies, soft drinks, water and fresh hot coffee. We also provide you with a nice lunch. You are welcome to bring your own food and beverages if you wish, or have special dietary needs. Alcoholic beverages are allowed on board but are not provided. If you bring your own, please consume responsibly -- for everyone's safety and enjoyment. If you would like to pick up food or beverages on your way to the marina, we will be happy to accommodate you.

The typical all day trip is 10-12 hours from the time we meet at the Sandspit Marina until we return.
