The Program

Although we fish for cuttys year round, our cutthroat season at the lodge starts at the end of March when the sea-run variety show up in big numbers in the estuaries to feed on fry migrations. During this time we catch an incredible number of fish, and see some true cutthroat trophies.

With many locations around the island to fish, this is an amazing time to experience the Charlottes. There are even some steelhead in the rivers that we can target as well.

During the summer, fishing the river mouths is not nearly as effective. The fish are not in great numbers and often picky on fly selection. In June we focus on the rivers themselves for the holdover fish. These cutts are extremely aggressive and incredibly fun on dry flies. They hold in some very interesting lies that bring great challenges for the fly fisherman.

Deep in the rainforest, we often find ourselves hunkered down in ankle-deep water, talking about the strategy of where to cast and what to do if we hook it. It's like Tiger Woods talking to his caddy on the green on the last hole of the U.S. Open, discussing which club to use.

If you fish for trout in freshwater, you probably already have the basic tackle needed. We use a 6-weight rod with a clear intermediate tip for the ocean and a 4 or 5 weight with a floating line for the rivers. A sinking line can be a great tool on sunny, bright days as the cutts may be holding a little deeper, when fishing the estuaries.

This is incredible fishing with a spectacular backdrop. Over a week you will have fished many rivers and estuaries and have experienced both Graham and Moresby Island.
